The Importance of Theory

The Importance of Theory

By Dennis Loo (1/4/19)

It’s not just facts and evidence that matter; it’s what your values are that guide your interpretation of the meaning for various facts. And while it is not particularly popular to base yourself on a correct analysis, which itself is based on a theory, which by its very nature is not based on what surface appearances can tell you, but something that is not immediately obvious, and therefore unlikely to be popular, what you base yourself matters a great deal. It’s not, then, a matter of what seems to work, in some kind of pragmatic sense, which in this country, is high and frequently praised, but what is true in a deep sense.

Let me make that even clearer: it is common nowadays to poke fun at Donald J. Trump’s making up “facts” whole cloth, as it should be, but it’s not just replacing his laughable lack of evidence for his “facts” that needs to occur, but a correct analysis and theory.
